How can I reuse or recycle old duvets?

We’ve covered sheets & valances and feathers & down – but not intact duvets themselves.

I was thinking about duvets last week – not just because I spent much of Thursday wrapped up in one and the rest of the week wishing I was wrapped up in one, but also because I saw this insulating blind tutorial. Admittedly, it’s for a quilted throw more than a duvet but a summer weight duvet would work in a similar way.

Duvets in good, clean condition can be given to charity shops/thrift shops or shelters/refuges to be reused as duvets.

Ones in less good condition can be turned into other bedding such as mattress protectors/under-blankets or pillow protectors.

Any ideas on how to recycling?

  1. If you have enough of them they would seem to be suitable for loft insulation.

I have two layers of polyester duvets, 13.5tog, over glass wool roll which retains the semi-permeable layer to avoid damp problems. Subjectively our home feels a lot warmer this winter. Time will tell if the gas usage goes down measurably. These duvets can be obtained very cheaply on the Internet and will not rot in the dark. They also resist vermin.

cushion/pillow stuffing perhaps? Not very exciting but it could work.

If it’s in good condition and thin, cover it with patchwork.
Or.. use it wherever you would use stuffing – pillows, soft toys etc.
Or use it for keeping things warm – pets, plants etc.
Or donate them to shelters for homeless or animals. Or zoos.

You can buy mattress toppers, for £££ — they prevent that horrible cold sheets feeling and help the bed warm up quicker. We use an old duvet, and it’s very snuggly.

Could they also be used to go under pond liners, like old carpet is?

how about the project i did – i made outdoor cushions for the wooden chairs. old pillows, duvets are cut to the size you need for cusions, back cushions or the like.

i also made a cat bed for my moggy to sleep on, it sits on top of the cupboard where he likes to snooze.

I have just spoken to our local Dogs trust who said they would be very pleased to receive our old duvets as bedding for their dogs

Several duvets, sewn together on top of each other make nice mattress for the quests.

Insulate the cold wall. Cover duvet with leather or upholstery fabric, nail down to the wall with furniture nails. Add the molding. Beautiful, and also reduces noises.

I use an old duvet on top of the compost heap – keeps it nice and warm – they will eventually rot and have to be got rid of at the tip but they do last for several years

I have an old duck and goose down feather duvet that is over 20 years old and is an all season one I no longer need it as I have replaced it, it is in reasonable condition and needs a new home for free
