How can I reuse or recycle a CD rack?
We’ve had an email from Lucy:
I’ve just moved house and now got shelves for my CD collection. What can I do with the racks I used to use? They’re metal with a wooden base.
We moved to shelves from CD towers a few years ago when the place John used to work decided to skip three wooden CD shelving units (even though they looked brand new) – they’re in a loving home now, housing CDs, random small items and in the case of one unit, my spare balls of wool. We took our old towers to our local furniture-focused charity shop and hopefully they went to a good home too.
But as for reuses instead of just passing them on – any suggestions?
Could be a plastic bag holder (stuff in the top, pull out the sides), or a mail sorter, or a picture holder (just use paperclips to hold in place).
I am planning to use my old one in the garden so that the Snow peas can grow on them

Wow!
I was going to suggest using it in the garden but that’s been suggested–turn it upside down, use as a plant stand with a trailing plant.
By turning them on their side, they make great kitchen storage.
In a pantry, you can arrange smaller packets and mixes and keep them organized.
Under a cabinet, they can be used to sort baking pans.
I’ve even seen someone place them onto the side of their kitchen workspace to use as a holder for parchment paper and other longer kitchen items.
weird uses:
saw it down and you could have a toast rack
use to cover outdoor lights to stop them getting broken
Ours has two knobs on top, so we use it for a hat rack.
My favorite was a dangling earring holder.
Have also seen them to hold thin scarves…
remove the base & lay on it’s side to hold Christmas cards or sort mail…
I have one I’m going to space tiles in & use as a shelf in the bathroom :)
You are a genius! I used a metal CD rack I was going to throw out. Worked like a charm.
Small pets can like it as a tunnel: rats, mice, etc.
I hang butcher’s S-hooks on it and hang my cooking pots on the S-hooks.
The one I have was thrown out by someone and I immediately saw a use for it.
I use mine for my husbands’s ties and belts.
