How can I reuse or recycle foil mince pie/jam tart tins?
A couple of weeks ago on the “Suggest an Item” page, Fishcake_Random asked:
How can I recycle the little foil tins that mince pies and jam tarts come in??? I have a large stack this year and I just know they must have some amazing crafty type useage.
(Apologises that I’ve only picked it up a little late – after mince pie season has finished for another year…)
Foil tins can often be recycled alongside cans in metal recycling bins/kerbside – and sometimes (although less so now recycling is widely available) to raise money for charity.
Like foil cat food trays, they can be used as a mould for making soaps or for little tealight-shaped candles.
Any other suggestions?
If you have children they make great additions to cardboard box robots, as buttons on ‘tv’s’ and other props for model making.
i was looking for this too, wasn’t fast enough. i have used mine to make icecubes as we don’t have a proper tray. nice big flat cubes
another thing, the mince pies generally come with a plastic insert as well. seed trays!
That’s an easy one, clean ’em off and make some PIES!!
I use them to keep colored beads separated when I am using many different colors or shapes…I also use them to put small amts of diced veggies in when I am stir-frying…that way every thing is ready togo when I start the dish
I’ve just thrown loads in the recycling bin after being asked what I actually planned to do with them and trying to come up with a plausible answer for a very long time…
I wanted to make re-usable cups for cupcakes, but haven’t managed to make any that don’t stick horribly to the foil.
I’m told that recycling aluminium uses only 5% of the energy it takes to extract virgin aluminium, so it’s very much worthwhile to just put cans, foil dishes, baking foil and pie containers in a recycling bin.
In fact, it’s rather a shame to reuse them for anything else that’ll mix them with glue etc so that they can’t be recycled after that use.
I’m sure that they can still be recycled, the metal will be melted, and the glue or crumbs or whatever will just be burned clean off. We’re allowed to leave the paper labels on glass containers for the same reason.

You can use them on cards etc, either by cutting the circle out of the bottom and embossing a design into the foil before adhering to the front of the card. Or I use my cuttlebug and diecut patterns out of it and colour with alcohol ink also embossing designs onto it!
How about a rain-chain like in the picture underneath?
I re-use them to bake pies and things. Great for making pies and giving them to neighbors and family for the holidays.
