How can I reuse or recycle old photographic slides?

We’ve had an email from Karen, asking:

Do you have any suggestions on how I can recycle 35mm slides in wallets?

I suspect that on a crafty level, they could be used in similar ways to photo negatives and the like but as Karen is a Environment & Waste Management Officer at a university, I suspect she might have more than can easily be reused – so does anyone know if there are any ways to actually recycle them?

Any other slide-centric reuse suggestions?

Drill or punch small holes in the frames and connect them with jump rings of any size to use as a light coverings, curtains, room dividers, or you can stretch them across a ceiling to cover up that bad plaster/duct work.
Be selective by topic and use them in scrapbooking projects.

  2. Clare says:

This isn’t recycling, but it might be worth listing them on E-bay or somewhere — there are people that collect old photos: ookpiksnegz.blogspot.com and http://www.snapatorium.com are two. If you put them in blocks of subject matter, they’d appeal to someone…

I think they’d make cool lampshades, as Bizzie Bee mentions.

  3. A J says:

Give to a local art group. They can use them for sure.

  4. Kim says:

I think the crafty arty thing is the way to go with them – either give to an art group or make some lampshades. (or, I’ll take them!)

    • Karen says:

      Hello Kim,

Would you really be interested in having these slides as I am loathed to throw them away in the general rubbish.

If you want them please reply to my email address and give me your home address and I will get them posted to you.

      Best Regards, Karen

  5. Ting says:

what about using them as wine stem identifier things (drilling holes in them and attaching rings)?

  6. I went to a jewellery conference where the students at Edinburgh College of Art, where it was held, had made badges for all the delegates from slide mounts with images in with white stickers behind so you could see the image, we have also used this idea for the Oxton Art Fair as our name tags. Just stick a safety pin on behind with a piece of sticky card.

Wrap the slide holders in fancy yarn and punch a hole at the top. Make small necklace photo holders.

Using polymer clay cut out by tracing a piece of polymer clay that has been embosed and fire.Glue it to the frame and make a necklace.

Link them together with holes on each side into an interestingnecklace.

An addition to my post above – I’m in England and will only be able to pay postage within the UK – it will probably be prohibitively expensive from abroad.

  17. Mike Pascoe says:

I have several hundred 35 mm slides from the 80s/90s on the topic of human anatomy. My mentor gave them to me and I like the lamp shade idea.

Also thinking of making a mural in the shape of the human body out of slides showing the anatomy of the human body.

Anything is better than a landfill!

  18. Sue Day says:

I have loads of slide taken by my Dad in the 70’s and 80’s all of holidays in Europe – some pretty stunning views – don’t want them to go in landfill. Trouble is I live on the Isle of Wight but could probably arrange to get them to mainland if anyone has a use for them. Please reply to sueday@onwight.net

  19. Amy says:

If anybody else has any old slides [dont care what subject or picture quality] or even unused slide mounts that they don’t need I would LOVE to have them to use as a part of my Photography course in college, teaching my classmates about e-6 processing, and as were 18/19 not many people have seen them before, so they will be well used as a learning process, the more the merrier!

I can also vouch for the slide lampshade idea made a few of these for my bedroom and change them each season to match, they light up each frame beautifully when the light is on:)

    email me at amy_rolo@hotmail.com please
i live in the uk if anybody needs to know.

Is there anyone or any orginazation that would be interested in my old 35mm slides, in the United States? I have 1/2 of a medium size USPS box full of them. I would hate to just throw them away. Maybe someone could use them in an art project.

  22. Wheeler5 says:

    Hi
I’ve got a fabulous collection of slides – all catalogued and taken by my Aunt thru the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s. They range in subject but mostly of her travels around the world. They are far too beautiful to hide in a loft for another 20 years or to landfill. I’d love to send them to someone for a community or college project.
Contact me on wheeler5@madasafish.com if you are genuinely interested in them.

    • C.Kent (user name only) says:

  23. CVCA says:

Hi, One idea to use old slide is to make a picture frame. I use clean sticks for stirring paint or any flat, thin strips of wood or plastic. Glue them in the size you want (8×10, 5×7, etc.) and when dry then glue the old slides onto the frame. They can go on in a pattern or overlapped or any way that suits your taste. Using slides to make a picture frame will certainly get comments.
