I have just peeled, cored and frozen prepared bags of apples from our apple trees. I thought that all the cores and peel were such a waste so I thought I would try something to see how it worked out. I put bowls full of them with a good amount of water into the microwave for about 15 minutes on full and then strained the liqued from them via a sieve. I I then liquidised the remainder and left that to strain overnight and scraped the apple puree from the bottom of the sieve and added it to the liqued. I then added a pinch of mixed spice (you could use cinnamon), a dash of lemon juice and a couple teaspoons of sugar into the liqued and heated it again to dissolve the spices and I now have a lovely apple drink – so nice in fact that I aim to freeze some for xmas so that I can add alcolol and make a nice punch. I still have lots of apples to peel so I will also have lots of juice drink.

A friend of mine works at a non-profits organization that uses baby bottles to collect money from churches to support teen age pregnancy support. They get cases of empty bottles, remove the LATEX nipple for the change to go into the bottle.
She gets loads of nipples that she does not want to through away or landfill. How can she recycle these LATEX nipples safely.
Thank you very much for your input. Jane

I work for a mattress recycling company based in the midlands, we are 100% committed to landfill avoidance, we have found outlets for all of the materials left over after a mattress is stripped but i am always on the lookout for new ideas on recycling. I am trying to find an out-let for the fabric that the mattress is surrounded in, the fabric is bailed and we amass large quantities per week and require collection, the fabric would be free of charge to anyone that could collect.

If anybody is interested in this fabric for recycling purposes please post a comment and i will get back intouch.

  15. Andree Finney says:

This may already be available i dont know, i work for a Charity which finds homes for homeless and vunerable people. Finding clean 2nd hand beds is problematic. So I was wondering if anyone has invented an industrial type steam cleaner. I imagined that each mattress in good condition could be vacuumed and and stains pretreated. Then the steam cleaning machine designed rather like a pizza oven. Where it is suspended so that jets of could be administered to all surfaces maybe also a discenfectant /insecticide. To improve the cleaning process a surface exfoliater could be added, rather like a car wash, continuous circulating the air in the machine could help could draw out the tainted vapour. When the cleaning process has finished any surface water could be removed by suction and warm air blowers could dry it out. Hooray!! Good as new!! Well in theory, are there any budding inventors out there? As some matresses cost well in excess of £500 a spotless reconditioned one could command a handsome reward, Many Thanks Andree

    Hi Louisa!
Next week I am at a conference all week. One of the motions for discussion (which is supported) is about replacing union reps and H & S reps existing card cards with plastic credit card type. I intend, if this motion actually gets discussed (it probably won’t get prioritised) speaking against the motion. However, I need as much ‘ammunition’ as possible and wondered if anbody knew anything about the emissions released during manufacture, how long if ever, they take to degrade & anything else that might be relevant. Call this pre-emptive reducing!

I have a backpack I would like to recycle and reuse. I have the straps and the part that goes against our back but would like to change the rest of it with reused fabric. Only the zipper doesn’t work right now but would like to change the whole outside pocket to add style.
I have some random fabrics including jean material from old jeans. Could the jean material for durability?

Does anyone have any simple but fashionable patterns that fit what I have? It would be fun to do a quilted backpack (but I don’t have any quilted fabric yet ). I don’t want to do a purse backpack just a normal one that can hold books and such. I’m trying to avoid buying anything so buying a zipper is out of the question. I have some other craft supplies but not extra zippers.

    • Rhonda says:

Hey Janet, how about stencilling, feathers, anything light weight. I saw a textile artist on a quilting show and they used tule as the background, rotary cut fabric, mostly lames and fancy stuff, into tiny pieces. they sprinkled the pieces around till they got the look they wanted, used a quilt basting spray, which is water/ air soluable, to get it to stay put, put another piece of sheer fab on it and free motion quilted it. Just a thought, good luck, Rhonda rosequilter@yahoo.com

Thanks for the idea of weaving the venetian blind slats… I’ve had some really nice ladder back chairs that I couldn’t afford to put new cain seats on I am going to try to weave the leftover slats from a set of blinds that I made into a roman shade yesterday. It seems like they would be strong enough and I can always make pillows to put over them as long as they will be strong enough to sit on.
